Myths and legends about Es Vedrà

The Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell biosphere reserve, within the Ses Salines natural park, is one of the most magical areas of our island. Always immersed in an aura of mysticism, there are numerous myths and beliefs that have arisen over the years.

Today we are going to reveal some of the most curious stories about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza:

The Silent Triangle

This is how the area between Es Vedrà (in Ibiza), the Ifach rock (in Calpe, Alicante) and the southwest coast of Mallorca has come to be known.

It is said that, as in the Bermuda Triangle, ships and navigation systems suffered failures and strange interferences.

Strange shadows under the sea

The legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza also has an underwater chapter. Sailors in the area have even reported sightings of huge shadows under their boats.

Whether these shadows are the product of unknown marine animals, foreign objects or one's own imagination is uncertain.

Divers have even heard strange sounds under the sea, seen shoals of fish behaving in an altered manner or lights that seemed to have no logic to them.

A pirate tower... without pirates

Perhaps, when you have been told about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza, you have been told that the best views are from what is known as "Torre del Pirata" (Pirate's Tower).

Well, although it is an oft-repeated anecdote, at Sea Experience we are obliged to refute this myth: there have never been pirates watching over Es Vedrà from this tower.

UFOs in Ibiza?

The last of the stories we tell you today about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza has to do with unidentified flying objects.

The founder of what is today the parish of Es Cubells (in Sant Josep), Father Palau, was already writing about strange phenomena and sightings... in 1854!

One of the most famous cases of UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) sightings in Spain is the so-called Manises Case, in which Es Vedrà is a very important part.In 1979, a commercial airliner with 109 passengers on board was en route from Palma de Mallorca to Tenerife when, as it passed over Es Vedrà, the pilot noticed the presence of red lights. The lights followed the aircraft for long minutes, so the pilot decided to make an emergency landing at Manises airport in Valencia. This was the first case of forced landing due to the sighting of a UFO in the history of Spanish aviation.
