An outboard engine, also called an outboard motor, outboard engine or outboard motor,1 is an internal combustion engine which is installed on the outside of a boat and which, fitted with a propeller, allows the boat to be driven and steered..

Outboard engines consist of a two-stroke or four-stroke engine at the top of the assembly, a gear system and a propulsion system which is arranged in the submerged lower part. Outboard engines are designed to be mounted on the stern pillar of small boats, and can be pivoted horizontally so that they serve as a rudder, even when the engine is switched off, to steer the vessel.Vertical tilt movement is also possible, allowing the body of the boat to be manoeuvred, submerging or raising the keel, in case of drainage needs or to avoid obstacles, or to protect the outboard motor itself while it is being towed. Another feature is that it can be easily removed from the boat, making it easy to transport for example for storage, repair or maintenance.
Some of them may have a tiller to move them manually as a boat rudder, while on boats they have cables and connections to a steering wheel and throttle control for the same purpose.
