Winter Storage

Winter Storage

At the end of each season, if your boat is out of the water, it is important to winterise.

Winterising the engine consists of taking measures to protect the engine for a long period of non-use. It is also the time to take care of the batteries (charging, cleaning the terminals and disconnecting them), to check the remaining fuel reserve (or to fill the fuel tanks) to prevent condensation from forming on the walls of the engine compartment. Finally, you can take the opportunity to make a visual inspection of the steering system (check the clamps, hoses and lining).

The wintering of a boat is also a good opportunity to carry out minor maintenance or improvement work on the boat.

We have one of the best winter storage facilities on the island, with capacity for more than 30 boats under cover. Our ships are specially designed to accommodate boats up to 14 metres in length.

The benefits of antifouling paint

Antifouling or antifouling paint is a specialised coating that typically contains a formulation of bioactive ingredients and water-soluble organotin compounds, which is then applied to the hull of the boat, slowing the growth of barnacles, algae and marine organisms that attach themselves to the hull during the boating experience.

Why antifouling?

If the boat remains in the water all year round or for most or all of the boating season, the application of bottom paint is more or less the rule. For boats that are left in the water for short periods of time (e.g. two weeks on holiday) or that are stored out of the water (trailer, lift or dry storage facility), a good coat of wax and regular cleaning are typically all that is needed to maintain a clean hull.

If the boat has never been bottom painted and you are mulling over the idea, understand that once the antifouling is applied, the die is cast, and that periodic bottom painting, cleaning and refurbishment become a permanent part of the boat's routine maintenance schedule.

Another consideration is that the application of bottom paint in some cases (especially on trailered boats) can be seen as a negative for potential buyers if they decide to sell later, but in general the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

What are the benefits?

  • Acts as a barrier against corrosion on metal hulls.
  • It improves the flow of water around the hull and therefore the speed and overall performance of the boats.
  • Avoids increased fuel consumption and costs due to damage to propellers, blockage of engine water inlets and outlets and damage to the hull surface due to marine growth on the hull.
